Obviously fake Spanish number plates. The IMDB says that the Spanish scenes were filmed in Corfu.

I know, I didn't mean specifically. I meant, why couldn't the girl have driven an Aston Martin or a Jag?

Probably to make the chase more "interesting" as an Aston or Jag would have had no problems dealing with the baddies 504's. I think this is one of the better chases on film, not so much from the driving quality, but just in that it was one involving "die Ente" (the Duck), which many look upon as not a serious car.. :D

I like this chase the most from the whole james bond series :) maybe aston vs. XKR from the last one should be compared to it.

Yes this chase was funny. As said in French above, this time James had to use his skills rather than car's gadgets.

In 1981, a bright yellow and surprisingly robust 2CV is driven by James Bond in the film For Your Eyes Only, including an elaborate set-piece car chase through a Spanish olive farm. Bond uses the unique abilities of the modestly powered 2CV to escape his pursuers in conventional sedans. The car in the film was fitted with the flat-4 engine from a Citroën GS for slightly more power. One of the many limited production series of 2CV in the 1980s was a series of "2CV James Bond" vehicles fitted with the standard flat-2 engine, painted in yellow with '007' on the front doors and fake bullet holes. This car was also popular in miniature, from Corgi Toys.

After Bond's Lotus explodes (what's the point of an anti-theft device if it involves destroying the car?), Melina Havelock (Carole Bouquet) takes him to her car, which turns out to be a Citroen 2CV (somewhat less glamourous than what Bond is used to), in which they flee from the baddies.

Same reason as a self-destruct mechanism. To prevent the villains from having it. You'll recall Bond's Aston Martin in The Living Daylights had a self-destruct.

The 2-CV of this vintage is noteworthy for having a higher horsepower-to-displacement ratio than the early-'80s Corvette: 29 cubic inches, 31 horsepower.

Thousands of farmers in France, Italy and Spain can't be wrong.

I saw the Bond Cars special, and Roger Moore told Hammond that the car was his favorite.

Hammond said that one of those would cost £7000 plus "All of your dignity" as he put it.

Considering that many think that the 2CV is a fragile car, this one handles a lot of beating and still runs as if it was nothing.

The prep crew didn't do too good a job on that as moviegoers could easily discern the modifications to the cars' structure in the scene where it was put up on its wheels again by the villagers after it toppled when they had to evade the oncoming bus.
Adding that steel roll cage certainly hasn't helped the power-to-weight ratio at all :)
