There are 3-letter German numberplates. Especially the "Landkreise" (roughly equivalent to US counties) which are rather remote have them. E.g. SIG = Sigmaringen. The overall amount of letters and numbers has been limited to 8 a few years ago, including the leading ones. Those describe where the car is registered.

The numberplate is no fake - I had to look it up. :) GLA is for Gladbeck, Nordrhein-Westfalen. This plate is not handed out any more because Gladbeck belongs to another "Landkreis" with different plates today. It just shows off how old the movie is. In the 70s the borders of many units of territorial administration were changed.

I live in Germany. I should know the plates. :D

There are three digit numberplates, but there was no such thing as an 'O' after the hyphen until the new fonts came out in the 90s.
