Given the rear badges, and that I was not able to find an Innocenti Mini with these side strips, I would say it is an Austin Mini Cooper Estate, although seems rare enough to have one in Italy... the Morris would have had a badge on the left of the boot lid

It's a 74-75 Clubman Estate, with Italian side indicators. Doesn't have Oct 75+ blue rear badge or May 76 "wood" panels replaced by stripe stickers. Clubman estates not sold in Italy until late 74 - they got the Innocenti T instead - but became very popular there afterwards. However this one's a slight puzzle - it doesn't have the usual 74-75 I square plate on the door but full mount in the bumper with plate lights. Which suggests there was a brief window in 75-76 before the facelift when the new format rectangular plates were used.

Is there a plate date, or a precise date for when square plates stopped??

Here are some more angles, not great quality but may be of some assistance in verifying the year

Roma R97981 is a summer (July/August) 1976 plate according to this table: https://www.targheitaliane.it/italy/table/date.html
Tried the plate with all apps/part sites and even had it checked with the subscribed ACI app but there are no traces of it, meaning that it disappeared a long time ago.
I'm not an expert about these, so I'm not sure what this means for badges and wood. May have been a late registration or a car that got a new plate after a few months for some reason; or those changes could have been applied later for our market?

Rome should have finished square plates with Roma R30000 in February/March 1976. Since not every province transitioned at the same time, there could have been a window for pre-facelift :) worth noting that most provinces updated the format within spring 1976, but there were a few (mostly small) ones that kept the old format until later, with the last one being Pordenone (PN) which used them until very early 1977 creating some oddities and extreme rarities like Ford Fiesta and Fiat 128 S3 with square plates.

Something along those lines ... but unclear precisely what. I don't think it's a blue badge so made before Oct 75, so I'd expect it to have the square plate mount on door, even if it was a late reg showroom orphan. Maybe it sat in the dealers for several months until after the new plate format arrived, so the dealer fitted the new bumper mount?? Or if a re-reg in 76, same scenario of dealer changing the plate mount to fit the newly required plate format?? Whatever, I think it's a 75 car supplied to I when new.

Incidental trivia 1 - estimated sales in Italy of Clubman Estates from late 74 introduction until final "Austin Mini Clubman 1000" in 1982 (=UK 1000 HL Estate) was slightly under 20,000, and it was the last overseas market for them (discounting ZA production which trickled into early 83). As said, there were no Clubman Estates in I before Nov 74 because of the Innocenti T, although a few Clubman saloons were sold there in 70-72.

Incidental trivia 2 - a Milan dealer called Koelliker did a sort of Wood & Picket-style custom luxury upgrade menu

Very useful ARonline page for reference.

That's entirely possible. Theorically they could have mounted the new plate on the door mount, since 1976+ plates were 2-pieces combinable. Examples on a Clubman Estate: https://www.targhenere.net/gallery/photogallery.php?photo_id=54252

but probably the dealer or the owner went for a better solution.
As a reference, here you can see a gallery of Italian Clubman Estates (some pics are 15/20 years old): https://www.targhenere.net/gallery/photogallery.php?album_id=243

Anyway, Bepi Koelliker was a very big and famous dealer. I think he was the biggest Leyland/Innocenti dealer, and he has sold many other brands, British (Jaguar, Rolls Royce, all British Leyland and Rootes ones), Soviet (ZAZ, Moksvitch, Volga), then Seat (after the split from Fiat), Hyundai/Kia, Chrysler/Jeep and others. He was also the first official importer in Italy of Mitsubishi and SsangYong. He also sponsored several movies filmed in Milan, and I think we have some of them in our database. :king: Some fascinating info there, particularly about Koelliker, and I enjoyed the Clubman Estate gallery. Never owned or even driven one, but have a soft spot for them - they're such pretty and characterful cars, and it's nice to know that Italy appreciated their quirky charm.

Always a pleasure :) yes, Koelliker story has always fascinated me. Some years ago in a 1/43 partwork about old commercial vehicles there was this Mini Van of Koelliker official service: Link to "www.arcadiamodellismo.it"
