Guess it's one of those Kdf-Wagens again. |

It is amazing that this example survived during World War II. |

It's a car from the VW Museum in Wolfsburg. I don't know, if it's still there, probably now in the AutoStadt-exhibition. |

Yes, this seems to be the oldest Käfer still in existance, chassis number 38/03, from July 1938. Originally it had license number IIIA-43003 and was used by Porsche KG as testing vehicle (some 400 kms every day). It even had a roll-over accident when a heavy truck came too close to it on the Autobahn Stuttgart - Danzig (Gdansk). After this accident only the rain drain was bent a bit (at least that's how they say...). 1940 it came to the sales company of Porsche in Berlin. During the war it has been used with a wood-gas-generator (is that the right word?) for over 100.000 kms. At the end of the war it was dismanteled and the parts were stocked on different places in Berlin. Nevertheless the allied forces found the body and seized it, but later the body was sold for 275 Reichsmark and the car was put together again. Only the front luggage lid was replaced by a new (series production) part, since the original one was disfigured to place the wood-gas-generator. The new owner used the car till 1952, when he attended a meeting of Volkswagen owners that had used their car for more than 100.000 kms. The Volkswagen factory bought the car back. By then the car had made 485.000 kms (with two exchange engines)... |
