RGC was London from April 55 with 1-500 apparently normal issue, 501-999 to Gov't Depts. Which doesn't solve whether this is genuine telephones van, or dressed up with stickers. As far as I know proper Post Office Telephones vans were almost always Morris until at least the end of the 50s (apart from occasional small batches of Fords) and were badged accordingly. There was one well-known intruder from Longbridge![]() - a 1963 evaluation prototype, along with a red companion 940 EXU for Royal Mail, but both were rejected and neither organisation officially used any other Austins, even later on when Mini Vans were adopted they were Morrises. All of which is a long way round to explaining why I don't believe this is a real phones van. But its RGC plate might mean it was something else official. |
