It may have already been mentioned, but the car in the film is supposedly a (Ford?) Cobra kit car with BMW Z8 parts 'tacked on' as BMW hadn't finished the Z8 for the movie yet. The car's body is made of fibreglass. |

Don't know if it is till there but the Beauliea motor mueseum in the new forest had the car that was cut in half on display, definitely fibreglass and not a lot inside! |

Unfortunately that registration doesn't register on the DVLA site but this film was made in 1999 and the V-reg plates started in the second half of that year, so it would be fair to list this as a 1999 car. -- Last edit: 2006-10-16 01:50:13 |

Actually, this car only looks like a BMW Z8. When the film went into production, BMW had fallen behind on the development schedule for the Z8 and couldn't provide the car(s, as they used several for the stunts and such). This problem was solved by fitting several old chevvies with the Z8 body, particularly in the scene in which the car is sawed in half this is evident, the engine is a very bare american engine, very much unlike the engines fitted by BMW which were covered in plastic to make the engine bay appear cleaner, as is common practice this days for many manufacturers. Never was a real fan of BMW's in James Bond films, though this is the best looking BMW ever used, sad that BMW didn't have her business in order and couldn't deliver in time, the saw is one of the best treatments I can think of for modern beamers |

It is my understanding that since the Z8 was not yet in production, the producers convinced BMW to let them have the only prototype Z8 in existance to use in the film and it was actually cut in half at the end of filming. |

Perhaps "Made for Movie BMW Z8" would be a more fitting title as it's not a real Z8 E52? |

It was not really made for the movie. It was just a preproduction model, but still from BMW. "Made for movie" make are for unidentifiable ones, or those which really look fake. -- Last edit: 2008-09-14 18:38:41 |

@Wasserspeier: one time in the lates 60ies, a truck-driver, who had to wreck the left over Glas-prototypes, had fooled the company. He drove back home, stored the Glas in his shed, packed an old Fiat 1500 on his truck, let it crush, showed back in the factory the paper-card "1000 kg scrap crushed". And then this Glas prototype was forgotten for 25 years... A friend of mine has worked over 30 years in the prototype-development-center of VW Emden, the Passat-factory. He was one responsible engineer. When the prototypes are not needed any more, he decided to scrap them. His "personal record" were 17 Passat 35i-prototypes, crushed at one day (in one car-magazine of the 80ies there was one pic of it, a mountain of prototypes, even one 35i-Hatchback was to see). All prototypes were always crushed completely, incl. alloye, radios etc... Sure, sometimes, he thought, that he better would keep them - but he didn't want to loose his job and his VW-retirement-fees. He said to me "For us development-eingineers, prototypes were nothing more than tools, we had to work daily with." -- Last edit: 2008-10-16 21:43:08 |

![]() Bond is introduced to the new BMW Z8 by Q's new assistant (John Cleese). ![]() R: Now, I dare say, 007, that you've met your match with this machine. Bond: Yeah, new model, improved specs? R: As I was saying, the very latest in intercepts and countermeasures. Titanium armour, a multi-tasking heads-up display and six beverage cup holders. All in all, rather stocked. Q: Fully loaded, I think is the term. R: I think... Q: You're not here to think, you're here to do what I tell you. The BMW Z8 is James Bond's new car in the 1999 movie, "The World is not Enough." The car, however, is a promotional for BMW, and is actually based on an AC 289 Cobra. The car is equipped with stinger missiles, a stability control device, and remote control similar to the previous BMW 740iL. The car only has limited screen time, and is cut in half by a helicopter saw. |
