Not large use of this beautiful '91 850i, owned by De Niro's character. Nothing special, no aggressive driving, but good exterior/interior shots.

I think it's later model guessing by the wheels, I'm glad there was no hard driving with it and that they didin't destroy it (that would probably hurt film's budget as it was expensive car).

This vehicle does not appear to be from 1991. At the earliest, it’s from 1995, which would make it an 850Ci (not an 850i) if the car in this film is in fact a 12 cylinder. I think the jury is still out regarding the engine, but my reasons for the model year go as follows.

If you look at this interior shot with De Niro behind the wheel, you can see this E31 has the later North American-spec 4 spoke steering wheel.

You can tell because of the colored emblem in the center (which you can just catch a glimpse of the bottom right corner) and the outline around the SRS section (which can be seen very easily). This steering wheel was introduced in around 1995 for the “1995.5” model year cars in North America, when the base V8 motor switched from the M60 to M62. The non-CSi 12 cylinder was also switching over from the M70 to M73, and the steptronic automatic shifter also started to the replace the conventional shifter around this time. Depending on when exactly a particular North American ’95 model year E31 was produced, it can have a different combination of new or old engine, steering wheel, and automatic shift lever. The one exception is the 850CSi, which was manual only also never got the new 4 spoke steering wheel.

It is clear that this E31 isn’t the CSi model due to the steering wheel, bumpers, rims that would only be found on lower trims. However, I’m still uncertain if it’s the 840Ci or 850Ci. The exteriors were identical apart from the rear badge, but there was never a good closeup shot of the badge in this film. It might just be best to label it as simply an 8-series (or 1995 8-series) unless someone else can more definitely figure out what motor was in this E31.

you forget a detail

they could have used different car for interior shots

That's theoretically possible, but seems unlikely. There were no stunts, so I don't see any reason why they'd need to have more than one car on set.

Plus, there's still nothing to suggest that this is '91 (or a V12). With the interior as it is, I'm still confident that this is a '95+ North American-spec 840/850Ci.

De Niro also drove a similar 8-series for one scene in Heat, before switching to a then-new Camaro.

I wonder if De Niro had an affinity for these BMWs.
