There's a big close-up of a GXL badge on the Cortina in the opening of episode 3 (just 10 minutes ago !)

In the small print and the engine photo, it's a '74-75 N-plate.

Actually the car on Ebay was a fake, it was a GT with fake grille and badges but that didn't stop someone bidding 12 grand for it.......

If you think that is a lot, Pope John Paul IIs Escort MK2 Saloon went for £200k+!

In Top Gear interview with Glenister Jeremy Clarkson said the car used in the series is actually a cut 2000E with GXL front end.

But yeah it plays its role as 2000 GXL.

Just a matter of changing the grille and lights (the grille is the only place you see the GXL badge on the show car) they should have swapped the 'E' badge on the rear pillars too. If you look at the interior it has the '74 on dash and fabric seats (the earlier GXL models had vinyl seats and different dashes and centre consoles)so it was definately a later car with the grille swap for the shows '73 setting. I've owned both types so I can pick out the differences.

Top Gear's Clarkson interviews Philip Glenister (Gene Hunt) and points out the Cortina is 'cut-and-shut'. (An exaggeration but the point is made.)

Agree other comments that this was a 2000E with retro-fitted GXL grille and K plates. Apparently various onscreen shots show the correct dashboard, boot badge and pillar emblems for an E.
