Hillman Minx? for me...

A lot of funny things happened in UK after WWII as the government had put all sorts of restrictions upon buying new cars since they wanted exports to get the foreign exchange. I agree with Sunbar that this is a Hillman Minx from the 1940s, but it is not the factory body. The most probable explanation is that the body was locally built on an ex military pick-up, or that work was done on a rusted out or shunted pre-war car. I would favour the latter as a possibility since the lightsand hub caps look to be chromed.

I wouldn't disagree with much of the above, although I'd say 1940+. For a locally built body it's remarkably good: it would be unusual for such a conversion to include rear side doors.

I came across this while looking for photos of Hillman Minx Phase One estate cars. Is it definitely not the factory product? https://www.sa.hillman.org.au/ID_Minx1946.htm shows the estate car from the 1946 owner's handbook, and there's also a photo at https://www.uniquecarsandparts.com/car_spotters_guide_europe_1946.htm . These sources are both from Australia so might perhaps show a locally produced body, but it looks similar to the vehicle in the film still to me, with suicide doors in the rear section which, as has been said, would be unusual in a conversion from a van or pickup.

Digging into my pile of Rootes-jewel bibles and a couple of other guides, I've unearthed 3 references to a UK build Minx Phase I estate. All 3 suggest very few made, 2 imply it was Commer badged and the 3rd by same author as one of the other two says it was Commer-derived but Hillman badged. Glass's has no mention for Phase I estate. So overall I think we have the basis to identify a factory build Phase I estate as real, and can probably accept Hillman as make. And both our candidates (as linked ^^) look pretty identical (maybe even same pale grey??), so are not on-offs.

Comments??

My 12 year old comment concerning not looking like a factory body was aimed at it not looking like the van body. If we have three similar cars then maybe a standard design was used, but, bearing in mind that Rootes used outside contractors for the Minx dhc, did they go down the same “Roote” for the Estate car?

P45 of Graham Robson’s “Cars of the Rootes Group” -

“Hillman Minx Phase I and II Specification

General layout:

Unit construction body-chassis structure in saloon, DHC and Estate car bodies. Front mounted engine driving rear wheels.“

Does the comma after saloon indicate that the DHC and Estate car were, or were not, off shoots from the monocoque?
Should it have been a semi-colon?

Does anybody care?

1946 Hillman 'Ten' Estate under restoration.

I offer this UK example via a quick Google

The Hillman ‘Ten’ estate is based on a Hillman Minx saloon with the rear body built by the Pressed Steel Company.

As confirmation of naming as Hillman Ten rather than Minx, official Hillman Workshop Manual.

Belated thanks for the interesting and informative comments that followed my question a couple of weeks ago. The web page found by /profile.php?id=Sunbar is particularly helpful, although also somewhat puzzling, since the unrestored car shown has Phase Two front wings (and perhaps Phase Two wheels), and the DVLA database says 831YUY is a 1948 car (perhaps on the basis of information provided by the owners when the car was re-registered in 2013). It leaves the impression that a Phase Two car has been restored as a Phase One although it looks as if the rear bodywork (which is what's of interest here) was the same on both versions, except that a photo of a 1948 estate at https://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/car_spotters_guide_europe_1948 doesn't show the rear wheel spats.

On the monocoque/separate chassis question, I do recall being told by the owner of a Phase One drophead that the car had a separate chassis, although I wouldn't attribute too much authority to anything that I remember these days!

@sps1955 - it was a very useful question which triggered some informative digging around. In case you didn't see it, things spread to a couple of Phase II examples which seem to have proper Minx names rather than Ten.
