This Mercury is somewhat puzzling. At a first glance , it looks indeed to be a 1946 convertible , since the heavy chrome bar around the grille seems painted and not chromed .However , if one looks at the hood of the car , this is a 1947/8 hood with the small chrome strip and in front of it the rectangle with the Mercury name :1946 models had a full lenght upper chrome strip that extended up to the point of the hood.I suspect this car may be a 1946 leftover sold very early in 1947 and already having the new '47 hood design. It may also be a car that was involved in a frontal accident and was refurbished afterwards .In any case it is a Mercury Convertible Coupe Model 76 ,thus either ' 46 or '47.
I also stumbled over the hood trim. But since this is the only part not '46, I assumed a replacement part to repair possible accident damage. FoMoCo in these years was notorious for trim shuffling ahead of the model year change (Chrysler Corp was even worse!), so I stuck with '46. It could also be a '47 that had the upper grille bar painted after a minor collision?
