This scene was an reenactment of the failed drug sting conducted by the detectives of the Victoria Police and New South Wales Police that occurred outside the Old Melbourne Hotel at North Melbourne, Victoria on the night of the 4th March 1982.

At the time, the NSW Police Drug Squad were after a local NSW heroin syndicate boss, Robert "Jumping Jack" Richardson, local NSW heroin distributor, Brian Hansen and their major heroin supplier; Alan Williams.

As this was a joint NSW and Victoria Police Operation, the detectives decided to conducted the sting in Melbourne with the Victoria Police providing the money for the buy and NSW Police Detective Michael Drury to pose as the buyer.

The sting went wrong when the unmarked police car containing the arresting detectives had overshot, allowing Williams to speed off with the heroin, leading to a car chase throughout Melbourne and ending up on the grounds of Melbourne University.

Williams was later caught in Adelaide in July 1982 and charged with heroin trafficking, his co-accused, Richardson was later also charged with drug trafficking.

On the day before appearing at William's preliminary hearing, on the 4th March 1984, Richardson had disappeared, his body was later found with two gunshot wounds to the back of his head on the side of a dirt road at Strath Creek, near Yea, Victoria on the 31st March 1984.

An investigation into Richardson's murder revealed that on the day of his disappearance, he was last seen talking with two men at an ice cream parlor in St. Kilda.
