A Chevy in the Third Reich? |

This is in Austria. The Austrian 'Anschluß' was in March 1938. Untill then it will have been well possible to purchase an American car. |

Did Nazi Germany boycott all western products (France, Britain, USA etc.) even before the war? |

Not at all, Coca-Cola was quite unknown (start in 1929), before the US-GI's have brought masses with them after 1945, but in 1933 100 000 bottle-crates were sold. During the Nazi-time Coca-Cola was still in production - disguised as a real German product, because the company was located in Essen. In the 30ies, Ford has assembled US-based cars and trucks, also Chevrolet had a small production-line in Berlin. The boycott of foreign products, resp. the stopping of imports, was declared with nationalistic reasons, but at least financial problems were the main reasons. All money, real, hard money (the "Reichsmark" was very weak) was used for the military and preparing the war. Surely, also in the 30ies the Germans have liked Hennessey-cognac, Scottish whisky, Bordeaux wine, Virginia-tobacco, French fashion, US-jazz-music etc. -- Last edit: 2008-09-10 21:56:51 |

I try to find out something more about the German pre-war-Chevrolet-production, but by a short search I've only found the remark on the Opel-page at Wikipedia.de, that the Vice President of GM, James.D Mooney got -from Hitler personally- at the 9.June 1938 that insignia: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verdienstorden_vom_Deutschen_Adler At the Wiki-article about GM, you can read, that in 1974 there was a research of the US-Senate about the engagement of GM, Ford and Chrysler before and in the WWII in foreign countries: 90% of the German military-trucks in Opel Blitz-size and 70% of heavier trucks were produced by US-based companies. -- Last edit: 2008-09-10 21:44:08 |

P.S. In the 50ies, GM and Ford have demanded reparation-payments of the US-government, for the damages by bombing their German plants and factories. |
