Beautiful car, probably my personal favorite of that year, along with the Hudson. 1954 was a pretty bad year for the US Auto Industry considering that it marked the beginning of the end for all the independent passenger car makers through a series of mergers. To be fair, it wasn't the greatest year for styling either. GM's new line of new bodies for '54 marked the uncanny valley between late-40s ponton design and mid-50s rocket age design - never been a fan of the styling of the '54 Buick, for instance. You could argue that Chrysler copied Kaiser's design to some extent (which had been launched for MY 1951) for their '53/'54 offerings and as such wasn't very original. Ford is Ford, the 1954 is essentially the 1952 but with a new V-8. Hudson tried to do something new for '54 but it was too late. Kaiser at least tried to keep up with styling by slapping on a grille and some new head and taillights, which was a noble attempt to make the styling competitive, but also too late. What really screwed Kaiser and Hudson over in the end was the poor management and the lack of a V-8 engine. On to more important things, subject car is a Special, very easily identifiable by the small rear window. A quick-thought way of getting rid of 1953 bodyshells. |
