Or even [W111] ? Any other view, especially towards the front? -- Last edit: 2022-09-21 02:17:49 |

Yes, you're right : it's W111 and not W110. Universal wagon were only built in Belgium from the 1966 & 1967 MY on 230S. |

@ManuelB: Indeed the 230 S belongs to the W 111, but how can you be sure it's a 230 S in particular? According to what I've read earlier and also according to http://www.heckflosse.nl/uni.htm the Universal started out in 1965 as 190 and 190 D and changed over to 200, 200 D, 230 and 230 S in 1966. Perhaps also a few MY 1967 was completed before the IMA bancruptcy. However 190, 190 D, 200, 200 D and 230 are all W 110. I don't know if it's possible to see if it's a W 110 or a W 111 from the rear. |

Gunnar V. Philipson (1883-1970) was a Swedish sitizen who had great interest in cars. He imported several brands, amongst them Dodge and Mercedes-Benz and also developed his own own car brand, called Philipin https://www.allcarindex.com/production/sweden/philipson/ , but the latter was to no success. Only a mockup in wood was built. Instead he became the first dealer for SAAB. He also bought a share in IMA which on his initiative built the Universal, or Safari as it was called in Sweden, when he saw the success of the Volvo 221. -- Last edit: 2022-09-21 19:59:02 |

This one, with this very specific original luggage rack, was an export USA model. Most of the exported IMA wagon were later model, and there were very few Diesel Mercedes in the 1960s on the US market. One of these 230S was for sale some years ago - on Barnfind I think - with part of this story, I must retrieve the link. |

Standard Catalog does not list any estates - only saloons for W110 and W111. It looks as if there was a change of importer in 1964-65 from an offshoot of Studebaker-Packard (based in South Bend, Indiana) to Mercedes themselves, based in New Jersey. No idea if this relates to the Gunnar V. Philipson activity - did he bring things in outside Merc's official list when he had a stake in IMA?? |

As far as I understand, he first contacted Mercedes in Germany, but they had no interest in estates as those were seen as delivery vans rather than people carrier. If someone wanted an estate version anyway, Mercedes asked that person to contact Miesen or Binz. If I remember this correctly, Philipson did just that, but for some reason or another they couldn't deliver. IMA could. |
