Actually they kept that design of Suburban through 1991. In 1992 it was then built on the new(at the time) Chevy pickup platform.

No. 1988 had the more stylish grille for the suburban and the K-5 blazer

The suburban is either a 1985-87 model.like nubby said the grill on the 1988 was more stylish and then changed over to the new style in 1989.

Supposedly its end, but looks like only CGI:

@ Neptune: unfortunately there are not clear view of the rear; best ones are in the thumbs above :)

Upon watching the movie, the fording scene, for a truck like the Burb, and despite the snorkel, could it actually get across?, I would think that the Alternator would short from flooding, and what with water getting into the exhaust pipe, well, the movie gives the impression it'd make it, but, it does seem a little hard to believe. Someone, prove me wrong.

If my little Geo can do it with just a snorkel I would think that a Suburban could also do it...

Just to correct nubby's earlier comment: The 1988 models retained the same grille as the 1985-1987's. The picture in his link shows what the 1989-1991 model grilles looked like.

actualy in the scenes were they are driving though the ally way , i noticed the first time i saw the movie , that they used a 2 wd modle for some of the scenes .http://www.imcdb.org/res/smileys/no.gif , it is clear in that scene when they show the front wheel , that u can see that the truck is much lower to the ground , and u can also see some of the wishbone ifs ( indipindant front suspenson ) conponits , they just took a peace of pip , made it look like a hub lock and added it as a center cap .http://www.imcdb.org/res/smileys/lol.gif

I was able to do some digging, and found out that Cinema Vehicles customized the Suburban (or Suburbans – they use more than one for different scenes) and that they were sold off a few years ago.

This was one of them:

[Image: DSC07099.jpg] [Image: DSC07103.jpg]

[Image: DSC07111.jpg] [Image: DSC07112.jpg]

The manufacturer’s build-date for this one was January of 1987. The 1987 model year was well under way by then and didn’t end until August of 1987.

So it's a 1987 [V-10] then?

Neptune US

2013-01-17 23:58

Well, that one is, the others were probably assorted model years. That one was used for beauty shots. The snorkel (for example) is not connected to anything, its just for looks. So it wasn’t used in the water fording scene. Another Suburban was used for that.

If others want to list it as a 1987, then we can. I don’t mind.

Ford_Guy US

2013-01-18 00:18

I mostly asked because the main shot is a "beauty" shot, as you put it. So I thought there was a high probability that it might be the same one. I will go with whatever the general consensus is.

Neptune US

2013-01-18 00:32

Oh, definitely. There is a good chance the one in the main capture is the one in the photos. But I didn’t want to list it as a ‘87 without other opinions, first.

If we know the year of one of the vehicles used, that's the year that should be listed, IMO.

Ford_Guy US

2013-01-18 11:10

I disagree, especially since the information posted should always only be about the main capture. But in this case, based on the aforementioned conversation, I think it's safe to say that the Suburban in the main capture is the 1987 Suburban in Neptune's pictures.

For the curious ones wanting to know what was lurking underneath the hood:

The 5.7 liter 16-vavle 350 cubic inch pushrod V-8 with single-point electronic throttle-body fuel injection.

[Image: DSC07392.jpg] [Image: DSC07393.jpg]

For 1987, computer controls were added in addition to throttle-body fuel injection. The V-8 would continuously tune and re-tune itself, while running and on the move. Feedback sensors would tell the computer how the engine was performing, and then the computer would use a lookup-table as a reference on how best to adjust fuel and air burn ratios, engine ignition timing, etc, for optimal engine performance.

Officially known as the High Torque V-8, it was calibrated specifically for towing and off road use (for work performance) in GM’s pickups and utilities, so it produced roughly 90 percent of its entire gross torque output at just 2,000 rpm.

The gearbox was the venerable four-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 700R4.

Here you go! They used four confirmed trucks for the movie. One was damaged in filming the river crossing under it's own power. One truck was sent to Universal Studios Experience Beijing and no one knows where it is today according to Universal Media person we talked to. The one (third truck) that was auctioned and is shown in this thread. The fourth truck was an 85 and we have a picture showing the 85 door tag.

We have under taken building an exact replica of the truck. With the help of several companies and Roger Donaldson. We will be taking the vehicle up to Wallace Idaho for their Depot Days Car show May 10th 2014. We have a facebook page /Dantes.peak.suburban with pictures and information on the truck.

Any questions feel free to ask. Here it is after the lights were on and our first snow on the truck.Still need to put the snorkel on and finish the build.

We own one of five know trucks. With the help of people involved with the movie we made an replica of the movie truck.

Once completed we took it to Wallace, Idaho aka Dante's Peak for their Depot day car show. The towns people were very receptive to the vehicle and we placed third in their car show.
