Superior High-Top ambulance/combination. Not implausible, since in rural America, cars serving as an ambulance and a hearse at the same time are not uncmmon.

Not a combination, it's an ambulance. Combinations have no High top :)

Neither would have a 455, since that engine debuted in 1970.

And to add a bit more to this mess, they may also be Ex-US Military units, because they had some of these?(Especially the '68s)

they flipped between the 68 and 69 on a regular basis in both episodes where those were used (i think the episodes were "deputy dukes" for the white ones, and "money to burn" for the black ones)

Ran across this old entry while doing some research.
Year still needs to be changed to 1969.

jdizzle is correct, probably would have been a 428, if they wanted it to get up at all.

I have a 1969 Pontiac Bonneville ambulance high top like the one in the top picture of Dukes of Hazzard. It came with a 428ci engine with factory 399 horsepower which was supposedly the strongest factory motor built at the time. In 1970 the power ratings started to go down due to new smog laws, cost etc. Mine is in excellent running order and had it since 1992.
