The Passat was called "Dasher" in North America, the Audi 80 was called "Audi Fox" (not to confuse with the later VW Fox). At least the cars are identical except the back. The VW Passat (on the European market since summer 1973) was developed from the 1972 launched Audi 80. You can say, it's an "Audi 80 Fastback". It was the second last try of Volkswagen in the 70ies to avoid the bankrupcy (the last and finally successful one was the Golf in 1974). So they offered cars, which were developed from other companies as own on models. The first VW Polo was just a rebadged Audi 50 (which was thought by Audi as successor for the NSU Prinz). The K 70 was developed by NSU. Without these "foreign made" models VW would have been crushed down in the mid-70ies. Beetle, Type 3 and Type 4 weren't modern enough. And the prototype EA 266 as Beetle-successor was a total desaster. |

P.S. The Passat on the pic is a 1975/76-version, the colour is "senegalrot". You can say "made for Sweden", because it has the lamp-washer-system. |
