Clark aircraft tug..with relation to the B17s...all used in the film were genuine wartime B17 Bombers, from around 1943/44, all had lengthy wartime service, but at the time of filming all had been converted to water bombers for a civillian fire fighting company..for filming, all were repainted and fitted with mock turrets and guns..some were destroyed in filming..the one which does a one wheel up landing was accidental and was not meant to happen..the pilot was in the process of landing properly when one wheel became stuck..he was advised to circle the field as a crash landing was inevitable..and the camera crew wanted to set up to film it!!..after filming, the remaining B17s were sent back to the fire fighting company..at least one was destroyed in fire fighting duties in the early 1970s..the remainder were eventually scrapped...as you can see from the above picture the B17 being towed has the tail gunners windshield, but a mock up gun..however, the B17s of 1941 did not have a tail gun or gunners windshield, so these should have been covered over for the movie. -- Last edit: 2008-03-13 16:54:33 |
