Correct ID. Note placement of the Studebaker nameplate on the trunk lid edge. In '65, it was relocated to the panel below the lid. Commander style side trim + circle S on the sail panel. -- Last edit: 2022-02-13 15:18:09 |

Was this car successful? Because it didn't really save Studebaker... |

It wasn't, and to be fair, by 1964, the moribund Studebaker Corporation (having recently closed its South Bend plant) didn't stand a chance against the fierce competition from the big three (and to a lesser extent, AMC). And it's a pity, I have always admired the styling of the 1964/1965 Studebakers. More so than the first Lark. The Avanti could have saved Studebaker, unfortunately production problems ensured its premature demise (as a Studebaker). |

Good general analysis. Yes, the South Bend plant shut down car production in December of 1963 and remaining cars up to March of 1966 were assembled in Hamilton, Ontario. Ultimately, the company was just too small compared to the big three, putting them at a disadvantage when it came to economy of scale. |

I also feel the way Lateef does that the 1964/65 models were better looking cars than the '59-'63 models. I remember seeing them in my uncle's showroom and thinking how nice and straightforward they looked. The grille was particularly pleasing to me. (Of the earlier Lark models, my personal favorite is the '62, with it's Mercedes-like grille.) |
