It was a diabolical deathtrap - any cuteness disguises its crude and primitive danger. Destroying them is like eradicating malaria.

No, I'm much too young. Most of these tricycles had disappeared off the roads by the time I emerged as a shiny sprog on this planet - they were a response to post-WW2 austerity and tax policies when raw materials were in short supply - a slight parallel in circumstances to Trabis in East Germany. As soon as situation was relaxed at end of 1950s and proper cars became widely available, they were thrown away.

One further point is that three wheeled cars of this type, provided that they weighed fewer than 896lbs and had no reverse gear could be driven on a motor cycle licence, which meant that no driving test was necessary. The removal of this hole in the law was another reason for the demise of these mobile death traps. I was around a while before dsl, and would add that some of the trikes were better engineered and less lethal, Morgan and Reliant come to the forefront, others are not so good.

How interesting ... I remember the tricycle that always made Mr. Bean nervous  and also the terrible test drive they did in Top Gear. The Bonds also seem of a certain quality

the Bonds with the Villiers 9E single cylinder two stroke engine mounted over the front wheel were, to put it bluntly, awful. I have ridden in, but not driven, one of them. You could justifiably compare it with riding in a spin drier, while breathing two stroke fumes and being rained upon. I think you must be thinking of the Bond 875, which used the Hillman Imp power pack, or the Bond Bug.

I love these anecdotes ... It definitely seems that English tricycles were an invention that fortunately passed away. In Spain, for example, the only passenger tricycle that had some success was the David ... although its production was limited. As delivery vans, however, their success was resounding, with the Trimarks as the benchmark brand.
