When looking at the data I'm seeing a few things that doesn't make sence, one such thing is that it's equipped with a 115 BHP 2315 cc engine. As far as I know, no such engine exist!

However, there was an alternative with 115 BHP, but that was the 1986 cc B200E with K-jetronic fuel injection, but with that displacement mostly intended for the Italian market. Did any of these reach UK as well?
There was also a 2315 cc B230K with 114 BHP, but that was equipped with a catalyst. That doesn't make sence either as unleaded petrol wasn't really available until around 1986 in Sweden, which was almost alone to do so in Europe, if I recall this correctly. And it really doesn't make sence that someone had imported a U.S. model and equipped it with European headlights.

These wheel covers otherwise usually indicates a MY of 1986-88, and the plain apperance with no plastic side strip and no chromed door handles should point towards a GL model.

There're no other registration pre-fix alternatives?

Nothing found. B682 XYK was registered on 21/12/1984, currently listed as SORN so it still exists, but untaxed. UK 740 GLE saloon listed from Oct 84 (plus estate from Oct 85) with 2316cc, 114 bhp "as GL plus metallic painted, tinted glass, electric mirrors, chrome wheel trims" and some interior bits. Catalyst arrived as no cost option from August 89 on all 740s.

Volvo uses MYs so shouldn't this be MY 1985 then if from Oct '84?

Thank you for the corrections. Yes, a 2316 cc 114 hp engine is likely; that was called B230A, equipped with one carburettor, a Pierburg if my memory don't let me down.

I still believe this is a GL and not a GLE, unless special edition for the UK market. That is because the "E" meant "fuel injection" in some way or another; I don't know if they used the german word "Einspritz" because the maker was Bosch (CI or LH) or if was "Electronic governed fuel injection". The latter might be wrong because the CI used very little electricity.

In Sweden and on several other markets, no carburettor model was ever called GLE!

Edit:
In Sweden metallic paint was always optional extra on most Volvos, the only exception being the top of the line models, usually with 6-cyl engines.
The early models of the 740, as this is, didn't need metallic paint to be sold.
I collected brouchures from the late 70's until about 2000 when cars became less interesting because of the amalgamations, and I remember I read the ones about the Volvo 700-series very thoroughly indeed.
Is Glass always a trustworty source?

It was a subscription-only trade publication not available to the general public, and used info supplied by the manufacturer or UK importer so should be as solid as granite. It therefore depends on what they were told, which they then faithfully print. It's not a car spotters guide in some of the respects we look for so you have to get used to understanding it sometimes - facts rather than descriptive (so it might say facelifted grille without saying what the new version looked like) and it's text only without illustrations. I've also noticed over the years that it can be incomplete - some minor changes are not mentioned (presumably because Glass's weren't given the info). Some occasional typos, which don't seem to get spotted or corrected for the following year's edition.

But if it says something happened, it probably did happen and I haven't come across any other source which consistently provides such finickity detail. Specialist marque/model books can go deeper, but inevitably only within the range they're covering.

In Sweden GLE was the only option if MY 1984.

I believe MY 1985 is more likely if registered 21/12/1984, as MY 1985 by Volvo (at least these years) counts from after the 1984 holidays. That would be a manufacture date of August onwards. It cannot be half a year delay between manufacture and registration, or can it?

Otherwise I believe Glass might be incomplete, at least from the information given thus far.
I've tinkled with a 1988 740 GLE since 1992 and in the process I've ordered spare parts at local Volvo dealers, and visited demolition sites more times than I'd like to remember. At those I've spotted plenty of differences, which I've tried to understand. Not least when compared with spare part catalogues and work shop manuals I own.

The differences between GL and GLE are as follows:
Apart from minor interior differences like that the GLE has vinyl covered plastic details and velour instead of cloth upholstery, the GLE had a different loom (with various electrical extras), a different gearbox (GL: M47 which is a 5-speed 'box made by Volvo themselves in Köping, GLE: M46 which is a 4-speed 'box made by Volvo in Köping, but in connection with a Laycock de Normanville J-type (later J/H-type) overdrive, the automatic were the same) and another engine (only the head?).
GL had a carburettor at first while GLE had various fuel injector systems.
In 1984 GLE usually had a B23E engine, while in 1985 it usually had the low friction B230E engine, both with Bosch CI Fuel injection. But one option (I've never seen anyone as early as 1985 in Sweden) might have been the B230F engine with Bosch LH 2.2 Fuel injection. That engine was usually designated for the U.S. market, but some might have been sold on other markets as well.

One, or two, other things:
- The hubcaps shown above wasn't available until MY 1986.
- The painted door mirrors might have been taken from a 760, but could have been painted by the owner.

When reading Volvo literature, the output varies a few horsepower on the same engine when I do cross references. I'm not sure what source I can trust anymore.
