Drives round the opening scenes several times - I guess the owner spotted all the cameras and was curious to see what all the fuss was about ...

I think because of less rear door wheelarch intrusion an Austin 12/4 Windsor rather than the 12/4 Burnham?

'STC' looks to me to be a corruption of the chassis No. 5TC prefix but probably doesn't help with the body.

My earliest Glass's kick in with some 1933 Austin numbers which list 6TC for Heavy 12/4 4&6 light saloons (no names) and for Sixteen Westminster and Carlton saloons, so I guess you're on the right track but I can't pursue further back.

This 1929 12/4 Burnham (OF 1111) has a 5TC number.

The first Austin after WW1 was the 20/4, modelled on a Hudson with which Pa Austin was impressed. The one model policy “nearly destroyed the company” (S&G).

The British market did not want a 3.6 litre 20hp car so Austin rushed to produce a smaller model, basically by a process of shrinking the 20. The result was the Twelve (initially announced as the Ten), which appears to have started at 1660cc in 1922, and increased to 1861cc at some point. Proof of the success of this policy is shown by the sales figures, the 20 selling 15,287 in its original form, between 1919 and 1930. The Twelve sold 69,444 to 1930, and a further 18,000+ in the 30s, all of 1861cc sidevalve four engine design.

Intermediate models were introduced as a 16hp in 1927 and 18hp in 1933. The chassis appear to have been common with the Twelve.

More to the point, a new Twelve in six cylinder 13.9hp and 15.9hp taxation classes appeared in 1931 which was called the “Light 12/6”, being a) fragile, and b) costing more to tax each year.

Finally, in 1933, a four cylinder Twelve of 1525cc appeared, known as the “Light 12/4” which lasted long enough to receive “Goodwood” type coachwork, and a development of the 15.9hp engine called the Fourteen.

At some point the original indestructible 1922 Twelve, which continued to sell until 1935, had to be known by some individual name, hence “Heavy Twelve”. That name appears to have been applied in retrospect, certainly my late friend who had owned a mid twenties tourer since the mid thirties, always referred to it as a “Heavy Twelve”.

The Seven is a whole different ball game.
