It's a dragster,with the shell(probably fiberglass)of a Bantam roadster.(These were once common)Could be an early AA/FA? |

It is a austin bantam body on a tube frame. It raced as a altered.AA/FA if it was supercharged which most were.Most bantam bodies in the 60s were steel.The body came from a english car made in the 1930s. |

Here's a bit of history on the white altered on the trailer. It is not a Fiat Topolino, I have two steel Fiat bodys for hot rods I'm building. The body on the car in the picture is a fiberglass Bantam roadster, circa 1932. This particular car was built by Mike Soskin in 1961 as the J&J Muffler B/A. It won 151 consecutive races, and won the '62,'63','64 Winter Nationals. It's best known driver at that time was Robert "Bones" Balough, who built the motors (Injected 301 SBC), tuned and dyno'ed them. The car was sold to Bob Lundsford who ran it with SBC an later a Hemi engine. He sold it after wrecking it twice, and the cars history is unknown until the Risso brothers bought it in 1987. They ran the car as the "Hard Luck Blues" for about ten years with a carburated 355ci SBC. It was the Goodguys NE-3 winner in '93 & '94. The picture of this car on the trailer in from an early scene in "More American Graffiti" when Steve & Laurie, Toad & Debbie arrive at the drag strip (Freemont / Baylands) to watch Milner race his dragster. DJ O'Neil bought it in 1997 and ran it as the "Grape Ape" with an injected SBC. In 2006 Sparky Horachko bought it and ran it as "The Ape". Sparky decided to advance to a faster class and sold the car in 2009. The current owner is restoring the car to either the J&J Muffler B/A, The Hard Luck Blues or the Grape Ape. How do I know about this particular car? I'm the current owner. Just wanted to share the car's history, and current status. |

Wrong hottopo. This car was built by myself. It ran in California as an B/FA with a 272 Dodge Hemi on Nitro with direct drive. It ran 8.oo in 1969. It also ran as an A/FA with a 354 Hemi on nitro and ran high 7s. The car was sold in 1971, and found for the movie by larry and Bill Hoge who worked with Lucas in putting the cars together as well as driving some of the nirto cars. Actually two of my cars were in the movie, the other one was the Purple car with the cross ram manifold that blew up on the line. This car was owned by Dwight Hughes and ran as a Jr. fuler in the Fresno area. I bought if from Dwight in 1966, and myself and partner Tim Wingerd raced the car as a jr. fueler at 309 cubic inches as well as an A/Fd with a 336 inch motor. It ran 7.95 at over 202 MPH. The fact the car only weiged 940 pounds without driver helped a lot. The body was changed by the Hoge Bros. for the movie. Just wanted to set the record straight. |
