My fault, so I have checked several sources; - Firstly, the Bentley Drivers Club publication "Members and their Bentleys" and "Coachwork on Rolls-Royce and Bentley 1945 - 1965". The correct usage seems to be "S Type" in the book, with the BDC, being supplied with the model names and details by the owners using S1, S2 and S3. The book also uses R Type for cars like mine, as do the BDC. Johnnie Green's book "Bentley Fifty Years of the Marque", mine is the first edition, 1969. refers to 'R' type and 'S' Series, the S cars being called S I Series; S II Series and S III Series in this book. Bernard King's book on the R-Type refers to its successor as the "S-Type", The Autocar refers to the Bentley Series S in its article dated 7 October 1955, and, finally S & G refers to "S-types" and S1, S2 and S3. I can’t pretend to understand the above exchanges, but wish to make reference to another book: - Graham Robson. The Rolls-Royce and Bentley Volume 1: Standard Production Models 1945 - 1965. This refers to the cars as “S-Series Bentley”, S2 and S3. |

Philipps of Dalham Hall, Newmarket in Suffolk. Recently it has been the subject to a chassis-up restoration, returning it to near new condition by Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists P.F. Autos of Stoke-on-Trent. The only deviation from standard are a stainless steel exhaust system, air conditioning and modern internals to the radio.
