Need to see more, it’s coachbuilt, and could be on lots of chassis.

An immediate guess would be, starting from the top and working downwards,

RR/Bentley
Alvis
Daimler
A/S
Sunbeam

Or possibly an Anglo American sports b-stard like a Railton or similar, or possibly a Jensen or maybe even an Invicta.
The windows in the hood look decidedly amateur, possibly an addition by some subsequent owner as the car got older.
I do not see any clues that help much, apart from it being pre-war and not mainstream.

Who puts a landau iron on a California top??

It appears that holes were probably cut in the hood later. The hood irons appear to be a necessity rather than an affectation, used to tension the back of the hood when erect.

Can't really add anything useful to jfs list of ideas. Looked at A-S Hurricane pics but not quite right (eg gap between door and rear arch). Most things I can think of had wires instead of posh wheel covers and wouldn't easily accommodate spare in front wing.

I am fairly certain that this is a prewar car. It looks to be in a rough state which, in a 1954 film, would suggest more prolonged usage than a post war car would have had. I do not think that the AS 16 and 18hp models ever had a side mount. Without having views either of the back or the front it seems we can go no further. Very few things are balder than me, but that spare is!

And I hope they don't expect to drive in the rain with those silly windscreen wipers!

They are not as bad as might be thought. The screen is flat glass, and if the blades are in good condition it is ok. The post war Bentleys up to the R-type had a similar system, and I can tell you from experience that it’s fine.

As shown in the picture, the blades are parked below the screen surround. When switched on, they go up on to the glass and describe a repeating arc entirely on the glass, not returning below the frame until the driver switches them off.

Agreed, but it looks like the total length of the arm and blade is far too short; it would barely reach halfway up the windscreen.

When the car was new the tip of the blade in the depressed park position would be past the corner of the screen, slightly overlapping the A pillar. In operation the normal wipe arc would then be just inside the edge of the screen, so the longer arm length would be wiping about 80% of the screen height.

In this case, they should park to the offside, below the surround. My car is just the same, when you start the wiper motor, they cross the frame, describe their arc, but on the return sweep stop and reverse direction above the frame. The two swept arcs co-incide in the centre. However, I don’t recommend 80mph in a snow storm!

The car just possibly appears in the distance in an earlier scene as cropped and enlarged here

It could be both scenes were filmed consecutively.

Also more of the bonnet length seen here

No real extra details but could give an idea of proportions and size.

Doing a quick survey of jfs' suggestions, these Alvis dhcs came close, compared to the others.

Forgetting the paintwork many details of the body (or coachbuilder only?) look similar, but not identical, I think.

The movie cars' hood irons always look wrongly placed to me, could be that they were reversed at some time in the past; or are they occasionally fitted that way?
