103E 3 is the 1172cc engine (10hp), 4 is the 933cc engine (8hp). I grew up surrounded by small Fords, in the family we had a Y 8hp, a C 10hp, an E93A Prefect, a 300E 7cwt deluxe van, my 103E Popular and a 105E Anglia, at various times. -- Last edit: 2020-08-27 21:37:27 |

The main difference is the headlamps, they can be changed but things like the bumpers and boot lid handle are an easy swap, when I had my Popular it got loads of bits added, mainly sourced from scrapyards. When the engine let go I bought a complete car for £7.50, (well £7.10 shillings actually) and bought remetalled conrods from the local Ford agent, the old pre 100E engines did not have shell bearings. When I tried to start the engine it was so tight that my Dad had to tow me for a few miles to loosen things up. I drove that car for quite a few miles on the rebuilt engine then sold it on and bought a 1958 Vauxhall F Victor, followed by a 1960 VW deluxe. One of my workmates had a E494A Anglia that had a Cortina 1.6 Kent engine. It was a frightening thing - too much power for the chassis. -- Last edit: 2020-08-27 22:46:22 |
