It's a 1984+ ( since it's a 4-door ) [E30].

Cafe Kranzler, unfortunately now broken down, one of the symbols of West-Berlin.

What do you mean broken down, did they pull down/raze the building? It has this perverse vibe of the East German pizzeria in Top Secret...

It looks as if the cafe closed sometime before 2000. The building was taken over by a retail chain called Gerry Weber, which opened a small cafe in the rotunda at the top. Perhaps they were trying to mollify Berliners angry at the loss of the Kranzler.

Here is a photo of the building from 2001, with Gerry Weber occupying both floors. Note also the massive new office block just behind. Perhaps the old Kranzler had been priced out by increased rents.

@Bravada: as Gag's links shows: the classic 50ies-style is gone, so getting uninteresting.

My best memories of this area I got 800 m from there to the left. A girl-friend lived there, who was worth to travel the 500 km from my home :sun:

Actually, if it still looks and works like in Gag's photo, it is very interesting to me.

Even though Berlin is the nearest European capital to Warsaw, I've never been there - I must go and check now :D

From what I've read, there's just a little imitation of the old Cafe Kranzler in the rotunda. The original cafe was on the first floor, as you can see from the chairs on the balcony. This floor is now occupied by Gerry Weber, as is the ground floor which previously housed various different shops.

But the building is still standing as in the 2001 photo? If so, I like this arrangement a lot :D

@Bravada: o.k., it's standing still there, but the "renovation" and the changing into other shops has destroyed the whole impression, the building for itself as a symbol for West-Berlin and a symbol for the style of the 50ies.
