I really don't know maybe @dsl can help us on special edition Pandas available in 1987 in UK? |

We've identified this vehicle using the details you provided FIAT PANDA 1000 CL 1987 Registration number: D928 XJM Body type: 3 Door Hatchback Colour: Black Date of first registration: February 1987 No black edition listed as variant of 1000CL - I've checked 2 different trade guides. There was a Bianca edition with 3 launches -March 85 (based on Super with sunroof - sources differ whether 903cc or 999cc), April 87 (based on CL with sunroof, 1st chassis #0592304), reintroduced June 88 (with grey trim, tints) - but all three are only listed as completely white all over (so if you woke up on a snowy morning and looked out of your window, you probably thought your car had been stolen??). And I can't see any Panda special editions on any version with 86 or earlier 87 dates than the 2nd Bianca launch. So nothing to explain that code reference. |

Thank you anyway for the very useful research nice to have also the first chassis. I knew the Bianca but indeed it was all white like the name suggests - so still unexplained what does this code mean. Maybe it's just an accessorized CL in the end |

^ These guides have a lot of chassis no. info, presumably supplied by the manufacturer. Also lots of gaps - maybe some makes didn't supply the info - but Fiat in 1980s seems to have near complete data. The normal 1000 CL had reached 05902715 in Jan 87, and it looks as if all 2wd Pandas at that time were numbered within the same sequence, whatever the version. But the system changed sometime in later 87 so that the Jan 88 1000 CL was 04089126, and similar 040xxxxx numbers on the other versions at that point. Doesn't say when the 059xxxxx system expired but can be guessed as 750L-based July 87 Fantasia edition was 05969489, and chronologically the next entry is Oct 87 Solar edition on 1000 CL at 04022548. And 4wd now part of the main 040 system in both normal and Sisley versions - in Jan 87 it had 05888221. But this is an alien world for me - I'm reading off numbers in columns on pages, with no idea if they contain other coding. -- Last edit: 2023-09-04 21:31:21 |

Thank you for all these info yes, chassis numbers sequence of big volume Fiat models sometimes isn't very smooth indeed. Usually last 6 digits of the VINs should be the serial but IIRC this doesn't apply to the Panda (and Uno), and those numbers seem to confirm that I'm not sure if Pandas had a plant digit, maybe @AleX_DJ knows more? I think Fiat group standardized VINs in the 90s, so the system became more comprehensible, and last digits allow us to follow the production numbers |

I couldn't find any precise source about the Fiat VIN codes, but I've seen that it's a diffused topic on enthusiast forums, and everyone agrees that they are definitely confusing. Anyway, it seems that there aren't neither plant nor MY codes Don't know if it can be helpful, but here there is the complete list of the Panda versions listed in build sheets: Link to "7zap.com" |
