It's one of the early J-cars. |

I'm guessing this is J3 at some point between Daytona track tests and her completed Mk IV body.![]() -- Last edit: 2020-06-22 21:58:57 |

Wind-tunnel testing at Ford Motor Company Dearborn which resulted in the Mk.IV, the purpose was to improve on the aerodynamics of the J Car /vehicle.php?id=1400842 |

Date of picture if it can be established might be useful to confirm which chassis. J-1 seems the only one built before Aug 66 and seems Ford kept it in-house, and they might have tried to redesign after feedback from the Le Mans test weekend in April 66. J-2 and J-3 seem to have gone to Shelby from Aug and Oct 66 respectively, rather than being kept by Ford. If this is an autumn 66 or later photo more info needed about who had which chassis and when. |

Documentary commentary - Preston Lerner. "Phil Remington returned to Dearborn with two of his chief fabricators, they took the first J-car chassis. They took it into the wind-tunnel and started literally cutting away at the bodywork…" |

That earlier image seems to be incorrectly captioned; according to this, J-4 (the third revision of the J Car) was the one at Daytona. J-4, of course, eventually looked like this. |

After testing J-3 at Daytona in December 1966 and February 1967, using an existing car J-4 rather than a clay model, Chuck Mountain brought in Phil Remington from Shelby American to help coordinate the styling. Within 10 days they finalised the shape ready for Kingman proving ground testing on 4th March. Kar-Kraft: Race Cars, Prototypes and Muscle Cars of Ford's Specialty Vehicle - Google book result. Further info from the same source... J1, J3 and J4 were J cars. J2 became G7-A CanAm car J4 reworked into first Mk.IV J3 also updated to Mk.IV configuration after testing at Daytona J5 to J8 were Mk.IVs from inception (not converted J cars) -- Last edit: 2020-06-24 13:28:18 |

I'd say this confirms that the vehicle in question is 1967 J4. -- Last edit: 2020-06-25 00:17:23 |

After fifty years its not completely clear if it was J-4 (or possibly J-3). The Kar-Kraft book was written by Charlie Henry 'a former Kar-Kraft employee', so I guess a reliable source for J-4 being the Dearborn wind-tunnel test chassis. A further attribution for J-4 being the basis for the finalised Mk.IV shape also here... "1967 Ford GT Mk IV J4: The final iteration of the Ford GT, only four J-Car prototypes were built before Mk lV production was finalized. This is the final prototype chassis and the car utilized in testing to determine the final body shape of the Mk lV.
