April to July 1960. County Borough of Grimsby.

Possibly, therefore, Bentley S2, with H J Mulliner Continental Coupé coachwork.

Aren't the headlights too low to be a series II ?

This is a coachbuilt car, you can’t draw those sort of conclusions.

It may well be a six cylinder car, I haven’t been able to find the exact one. The numberplate may be later than the car, the owner might have liked the earlier body design, you may note that I said “possibly”. It may have taken several months to put the body on the chassis.

The Series 2 chassis was introduced in 1959, unless I can find the exact car, I go on dates alone.

I hesitate to venture into the dark forest, but it has spiders-eye headlights and the pimple sidelights seem earliest version. with many S2s in our collection having a more normal (and better-looking) position on wing top. So did Mulliner carry on using S1 bits for a fair time after Bentley had upgraded? Did anyone notice?

It could be an R-type owned by Oswald Ernest Eckersley for all I have been able to find.

My opinion is that you can only go with what you see, and in this case I chose to assume that the car and the numberplate matched. Mulliner might have done what the original customer told them, or the car could be the possessor of a plate that made it look newer than it actually is.

I think I’ll concentrate my efforts on Bond Minicars from now on, it’s probably safer.

i'd love to see 007's face as Q presents him one of them as his new car, telling him " What ? your name is on it " .. :D
