This is actually episode 0 -- the original pilot entitled "The Vintage Years". It was produced in the spring of 1981, but remained unaired. This predecessor was totally revamped, and the series was renamed "Falcon Crest".

I am attaching a still photo from the set, which shows the hood of the Bentley, which might be useful for identifying the model.

Just as a side note, this was the car of the main character, Angie Channing (Jane Wyman). When the show was revamped, it was replaced with the iconic black Mercedes-Benz 600: vehicle_449979-Mercedes-Benz-600-W100-1969.html

It does not have a hood, it’s a saloon.

It seems to be a Type S, Series 1 or 2 Standard Steel Saloon, apparently Sand over Sable, the same colours as my Bentley, but the iPad may not be accurate.

Thank you for the picture of the bonnet and grille, removing any doubt that it might be a lesser make.

It’s not unknown, it’s an S-Type.

The query rests upon whether it is S1, with a 4.9 litre straight six, or S2 with a 6.3 litre v-8.

The S3 had a lower bonnet line, a shorter grille, and four headlights, so the front wings were not this shape.

Thank you so much for your help. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the engine or the dashboard available to determine if it is an S1 or S2. I checked the shooting schedule and other production documents, but it states "Bentley" only with no further information. I am afraid we don't have the rental agreement for the picture car in our archives.

This screen capture from a different source shows the body color a bit more realistically, I think:

You are most welcome.

Because R-R chose not to differentiate by outward appearance, unless under bonnet or numberplate views permit it, there is always this dilemma, which the management avoid by just saying S-Series or Silver Cloud.

The same difficulty occurs with straight on front views of certain MkVI and R-Type Bentleys, so in that case the tendency is to say “earliest first”.

My view is that if mention is made in the text, there is no problem.

Thanks for the extra thumb, looks Sand over Sable to me.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I understand that this must bean S1 or S2. S3 can be ruled out because of the shape of the hood around the headlights, so it definitely a pre-1962 model. Is there any way to determine the model year?

There is no solid way of splitting S1 or S2 from exterior views alone, as jfs says so date range is 1955-61. Sometimes we do it - or think we can - from secondary clues, but overall not with any consistent reliability or universal agreement.

The first Bentley S1 cars were delivered in April 1955. (LWB did not commence until Nov. 1957.)

The last Bentley S1 cars were delivered in August 1959.

The first Bentley S2 cars were delivered in August 1959. (With the exception of 2 prototypes.)

The last Bentley S2 cars were delivered in the months shown.

B376DW was delivered in October 1962. (Standard Steel Saloon).
LLB 33 August 1962. (Long wheelbase saloon).
BC139CZ October 1962. (Continental).

The first Bentley S3 cars were delivered in the months shown.

B2AV October 1962. (Standard Steel Saloon).
BAL 2 October 1962. (Long wheelbase saloon).
BC2XA October 1962. (Continental).

Therefore, a car delivered during 1962 could be either an S2 or an S3 if its exact date of delivery is not known, and the headlights and surrounding coachwork are not shown.

This information distilled from: - “Twenty Years of Crewe Bentleys 1946 to 1965”. Bentley Drivers Club 1973.

@TJP ... so if you have external confirmation from other sources of the car being a 1962, it's valid to ID as S2. If not we stick as we are.
