W 108, perhaps a W 109. Mhh, my absolute dream car: 300 SEL 6.3 (forbidden my my wife ) |

W109 with W116's wheels? |

Yes, the 300 SEL 6.3 had these wheels, I think also the 3.5 |

With the help of the thumbnail it's possible to see it's a [W108] due to the thickness of the chrome trim around the windows. The [W109] has a thicker chrome frame around the windows. Another detail is that this seems to be an SEL ( by the different size of the door windows ). So, I suppose this could be a 1968+ 280SEL or even a 1971 280SEL 3.5. Although these wheels and lightning equipment could be adapted to the 280SEL, they are more according to the 1971 280 SEL 3.5. |

@rpcm: but this Benz has a white (so the thinner) steering-wheel, so it cannot be one of the last ones from 1971/72. |

The white steering wheels were a popular optional in the M-B ranges until the introduction of the new generation of padded steering wheels. Each range had its specific steering wheel and although they could look similar at first sight, they had different designs and dimensions. As far as I know, the white steering wheels followed the design and thickness of the black ones they were intented to replace. In the particular case of a 280SEL 3.5, I'm not sure if they were still officially available for this version, but this is a 1998 movie and this car may have received it later. -- Last edit: 2007-10-18 00:40:52 |

@rpcm: yes, the white one was an option. But the later W108/109-versions -also the 300 SEL 6.3- hat the newer, padded and thicker steering-wheel, too. If you have that one, it's very problematical (or even impossible) to mount the old-style-part. That's my intention, why the Benz shown above could't be one of the latest of its line. |

That's not what I found about it. As far as I know, these versions had a steering wheel similar to that of a 280S or SE [W108]. In the case of the 6.3, for instance, there was a difference in the dashboard with a small rev. counter in the place of the clock ( it received a rectangular clock near the air vent ) but also with the same steering wheel. The first S-Klasse cars that received the new padded steering wheel were the [W116] ones. Perhaps you've seen some [W108] cars that were "updated" with a newer steering wheel, but you can believe that it wasn't the original one. -- Last edit: 2007-10-19 01:40:49 |

The last 6.3 from 1972 had definetely the new steering-wheel, like the W 116, W 107, W 123 and so on. I've seen such 6.3 in real, also in the issue 10/2007 of the German magazine "Oldtimer Praxis" was shown such a late 6.3 ("32 years in one hand") I don't know, when Mercedes has started to mount the new steering-wheels, but it should be in 1972. The 6.3 was built until September 1972. I'm even not sure, if the W 109 had thicker chrome around the windows, as you wrote. As I know, the only original optical differences between a 6.3 and the other W 108/109 were - the bigger wheels with alloys in the W 116-style - the double, vertical front lamps - the foglamps - the small rev.counter I've read, that also the double exhaust-pipe was typical for the 6.3, but you can see also smaller W 108/109 with it. As I wrote, the 300 SEL 6.3 is my ultimate dream-car. I'm collecting a bit literature about my dream, but not so fanatical and worldwide like for the K 70. You never know, perhaps somedays will come the time, when I'll have a use for these informations... This depends on my wife. -- Last edit: 2007-10-19 18:26:22 |

First of all, this can't definetely be a 300SEL 6.3 [W109] because of the thicker chrome frame around the windows that characterizes the [W109]. If you have a look at the [W109] cars shown on "Driving Miss Daisy" and "A-ha : The Blood That Moves the Body" you will see what I mean. About the steering wheels of the 1971/72 280SEL 3.5, I suggest you to see, for instance, those for sale on mobile.de. |
