I think this is rather a super rare 2000 Mazda 121. UK sales of the 121 did not continue particularly long after the facelift.

The Mazda has thinner black strips than the Ford (or body coloured ones), closely fitting our car:

Glass's only lists the 121 from March 96 (1.3 GXi) and Jan 98 (1.25 GSi) until both ended Jan 2000. No facelift or changes mentioned.

Details match a facelifted 121 more closely than the common Fiesta though, IMO. It could be a foreign visitor, but I do recall the 121 was very briefly offered here with the facelift, before they cancelled it in favour of widening the model range of the (Gran Turismo hero) Demio.

The twin Fiesta received the "new-edge" facelift in October 1999 for reference. There's probably not much interest for editors of such guides in giving exceptionally detailled information on an obscure car that's identical to another car.

EDIT: Here's one that made it to the UK: https://www.flickr.com/photos/derelictscotland/32918547016/

Glass's seem to have got themselves in a bit of a guddle about the 121. The simple version above was from 2008 edition with 1.25 GSi as 5 door only and 1.3 GXi as 3 door only. 2003 is more complicated, adding a 1.25 ZXi (3/5 door Mar 96 to Dec 97, and a CVT option on 5 door until July 97), a 1.3 GXi 5 door (Mar 96 to Dec 97), a March 97 Icon edition (3 door GXi in Radiant red with a few bits) and a 1.8 Diesel DXi (3 door only, Mar 96 to July 97). 2005 edition similar to 2003 but some scrambled headings. Nothing mentioned in any of the three editions about anything after Jan 2000. Also can't find any online 2000+ mentions from Honest John or Parkers.

But agree with your visual similarities to the facelift as Mazda and different from Ford. That link to UK with Y727 CSC plate comes up as April 2001 registration (also a rear view), and googling "2001 Mazda 121" turns up a Belgian 2001 example amongst others in NL and B, including a Dutch van conversion by Terberg.

... and now even an April 2002 UK plate SK02UVL listed as GLX and May 2002 SK02VJG listed as a GSi.
