Here we have a Soviet KhPZ (Kharkov Steam-Engine Factory) T-34 which was heavily modiefied to give an apperance of a German 'Tiger' tank. The 'Tiger' was made by Henschel and officially called Pz.Kw.VI Sd.Kfz.181 'Tiger'.

On still images the fake is easy to spot as the running gear on the Tiger is different, the turret further aft and the tracks are wider. But it is a great effort Spielberg made and the result is quite convincing. At last a film were not a US M48 is trying to play the role of a German WWII tank.

the fake "Tiger" is still in working order and can be seen
at Tank Museum in Bovington GB.

the other fake tiger which gets its track blown off in the movie was broken up in 2005 in order to provide decent running gear for a t34 being restored.

Shouldn't it be "Made for movie Pz.kpfw VI E" ?

"Made for Movie" is for vehicles built from scratch or on an unknown basis. According to Alexander, the basis of this one is known.

The 1970 movie, Kelly's Heroes, featured three Tiger tank mock ups. These were modified T-34 tanks like the ones in Saving Private Ryan, but they actually looked a bit more realistic.

Contrary to popular belief, the other Tiger (the one that 2491tj mentions) was NOT dismantled, and resides in the private collection of a friend of mine. At the moment it is not running, as the engine is being rebuilt in the shop that I work in, but it was occasionally being used by the 9thSS re-enactment group and video's can be found on YouTube.

Another misconception is that they only used the running gear of the T34/85. The fact is that there is a COMPLETE T34/85 under the 'Tiger' shell, turret and all.

Oh yeah, the T-34's used for the film were mid to late 50's models, not 1940 (that would have been the T34/76)

Historically this is wrong....tigers would not have been in this part of Normandy until 12 June..at this time the movie is set, the tanks would have been captured French ones employed by Panzer Abtielung 100..an Army unit...not SS

The SPR T-34 'Tiger' with "blow-up" engine/rear was last seen on display at IWM Duxford. The runner has had several owners. I can currently be seen with the the 9SS Panzer Div. reenactment group in the Pennsylvania - same unit has one of the BoB FV432 'StuGs'

It's T-34/85, according to: http://www.network54.com/Forum/47207/message/1113826720/Not+a+t-55+chassis

Bumar T-34/85 from Bovington Tank museum (they have 2 examples: Polish post-war in running condition and one exhibit inside museum - captured in Korea)

One of these T-34-85's is currently at IWM Duxford, dressed up in an 'ambush' position. I'm not sure about the other, but I hear it's still working.
