The left taxi is a Packard taxi of 1948 .The Packard factory built a range of taxis powered by Packard's six cylinder engine designated the model2240 sedan taxi ( shown here) and model 2220 new York type long wheelbase taxi with six wondows.On the left is a De Soto S-11 7-passenger taxi on the 139.5 inches chassis Taxis were more probably De Luxe versions.In New York , the " Skyview" De Soto taxis had an opening roof panel above the rear seat to allow customers viewing the skyscrapers ( in nice weather...).De Soto taxis were reputed for their extreme durability in city traffic.An example was said to have run more than half a million miles in New York. |
