The M8 Howitzer looks quite different:

The running gear and the hull looks like the M41 'Walker Bulldog'. The turret is not the original one, perhaps a retrofit. It looks more like the turret on the M551 'Sheridan'.

Why didn't the production team just use old American Tanks?, their shooting ranges for target practice of both planes and armour use old vehicles, I mean, it would have been easier than say trying to make an American tank look like a Russian T-72, besides, the Russians don't use American trucks and Jeeps in their own convoys! - but, this would be typical of movies of the time, anything that was supposed to be Russian was American disguised as Russian.

Why would Nova use actual Soviet vehicles? These are just test vehicles for a military demonstration. Rather than try to acquire actual Soviet vehicles it makes more sense for Nova to just scrounge together some available American military ones. Nova wasn't going for authenticity, just for the visceral impact of their robots annihilating a bunch of "Soviet" army trucks to impress attending US Army officials.

Inworld, the modifcations to the Bulldog could be explained by the fact Nova modified it for the test since it had to be able to turn and fire by remote control. All of the vehicles used were remote controlled. Perhaps they just needed to build a custom turret and gun around the components, after removing the original one(s) to install them?
