It's not a Colt and not related to M16 in any way.

You're right on the first part, it was made by Armalite. Since Colt made some Armalite weapons under license (and eventually bought the rights to the AR-15), this was the source of my confusion.

I disagree about it not being related. The AR-18/180 was a design evolution of the AR-15, from which the M16 was also developed.
