This is an Irish film with fake UK plates. Just seen an unexpected reference (Classic & Sportscar magazine, March 2021, p45 on letters page) for a unique Irish version as Wolseley 1200. When UK build of Austin A40 [GS5] finished in Feb 57, Longbridge was left with a pile of 1200cc B-series engines without a useful purpose. Most of them were sent over to Ireland to take advantage of its local motor tax bands based on engine size. Wolseley assemblers Booth Poole & Co fitted them into 1500 shells in 57-58 as Wolseley 1200, before launching the normal version in 58. Austin assemblers Lincoln & Nolan also received some of the engines and created a unique Austin A45 Cambridge sibling simultaneously with the normal A55 Cambridge Mk1 [HS6]. Both the 1200 and A45 seem to have ended in 58 when the shipped-over batch was used up. |
