I'd like to know if Cary Grant was actually there. Hitchcock used so much rear-projection in that film that Cary could be standing in front of a screen as he and Eva did when they walk along the station platform with Cary wearing the red cap's clothes. The screen behind them shakes. T |

Looking at how far he runs ought to show whether it's real. If he was in front of a projected background, it would be impossible to show his feet walking on the road. |

A screen double could have been used. In this image the light on him looks studio. They've avoided showing the long morning shadow he would have left on the ground (as the cars have). T |

Most of the airplane scenes were shot using a false embankment in studio. I recorded a documentary "Destination Hitchcock: The Making of North By Northwest" off of Turner Classic Movies channel. A double was used with the oil tanker truck. Background shot in Wasco, Calif. outside of Bakersfield. |

Yeah, I was really thinking about how far he moves in this shot. |

Grant is actually in the shot. I'm watching the movie right now. His feet, and consequently his shadow, are offscreen. He walks towards the cars and casts a shadow and interacts with the people getting out of the cars. No rear projection used at all. Also, what is the car behind the Dodge? It isn't listed. |
