Although the explosion did look a bit weird, i think they did blow the car up instead of CGI.. Two stars.

This scene was a reenactment of the murder of Gambino's Underboss, Frank DeCicco who was blown up in his car by associate of the Genovese Crime Family, Herbert Pate outside the Veterans & Friends Social Club in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn on the morning of the 13th April 1986.

According to the investigation into DeCicco's murder, following the murders of Paul Castellano and Thomas Bilotti, Castellano's ally and boss of Genovese Crime Family, Vincent "Chin" Gigante had found out that Gotti had ordered the hit on Castellano and Bilotti and had wanted to kill Gotti and DeCicco in retaliation as Gotti had violated another Mafia Commission's Rule that forbids any member of the Mafia from killing or ordering the murder of the head of a crime family without the Commission's approval.

As Castellano's successor as Chairman of the Mafia Commission, Gigante had turned to the head of Lucchese Crime Family, Vittorio "Vic" Amuso and his underboss Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso to kill Gotti and DeCicco who in turn, enlisted Pate to provide the IED bomb and place the bomb to the underside of the car.

In reality, the vehicle that DeCicco had was a 1985 Buick Electra Park Avenue with New York registration number 4992 TAR.

After DeCicco's murder, Gotti appointed Gambino Capo, Joseph "Piney Shorty" Armone as DeCicco's successor as Gambino Underboss.
