Willys Overland Whippet? |
◊ 2018-05-04 21:40 |
It is American, I would say, a British car would usually have lower headlights. |

In the US Whippet was a stand alone make within the Willys organisation but what it was known as in the UK I don't know. This one is obviously a variation of the Whippet Model 96 but I can't find anything on the net about the UK versions. |

https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Willys_Overland_Crossley There is an ad for a vehicle described as an Overland Van at £295, obtainable from Manchester, as a product of the Willys Overland Crossley organisation. Whether it got here as a ckd kit, or if there was local fabrication I know not. -- Last edit: 2018-05-04 23:23:58 |

I've got a book reference for (Willys-)Overlands being built in Stockport 1919-31 in a disused plane factory at Heaton Chapel. William Letts of Crossley was apparently a friend of NJ Willys. Made both cars and commercials, usually using CDN-supplied CKD-kits with varying degrees of UK content, and there were some pure UK models using Morris Oxford engines. In late 1920s Overland commercials were sold as Manchester brand. Overland-Crossley stopped Willys assembly in 1931, then built AJS cars until going bust in 1933. Seems main car models were CKD-import Overland 18hp in early phase, then 1925-26 was 13.9 with lots of Morris-sourced bits, then 1926-30 a wide range of Whippet versions with 4 and 6 cylinders. |

The 295 pound Overland van is a bit early at 1922, but possibly the one here is a later version? |

There is a second source in Georgano which confirms the Baldwin information. The picture in the Overland entry in the Baldwin book of a two door saloon Overland Whippet matches the front end and wheels of the subject van. -- Last edit: 2018-05-05 09:00:28 |

Manchester truck. http://steamwagon.com/manchester.htm |

Those linked Manchesters seem to be bigger trucks, all with square radiators. Entering as 1926 Overland Whippet Van, US origin and built in UK. |

Yes, an old friend of mine's Dad ran Manchester trucks in his company before WW2, they were trucks and not car derived lcvs. They then used Fodens and finished with MAN. I would agree with your suggestion of Overland Whippet Van. -- Last edit: 2018-05-05 17:19:25 |
