It is a Holden 48-215, the first model built by Holden. They were released in November 1948 and ran until 1953. Commonly known as the "FX" or "early model" but official name is 48-215

The film Black and White is set in South Australia, in and around Ceduna and also in Adelaide, during the early 60’s and provides glimses of some interesting vehicles of the era - including a 1952 Tarragon Green 48-215 Holden which is driven Robert Carlyle’s character, the accused’s not so successful lawyer. The FX, which I owned at the time, was loaned to the production studio which transported it to Pt Wakefield where much of the Ceduna footage was shot. When it was collected the nice young man who had been entrusted with the job pronounced it was in too good condition and “would need to be roughed up a bit”. Having spent a couple of days getting her looking better than she ever had whilst in my possession, I was somewhat perplexed to hear this! Nevertheless, I obliged by removing the nice shiny new chrome work, replacing it with some dowdy looking parts that had seen better days. We then had a very serious conversation about how it was to be looked after and what cosmetic treatment it could be given to achieve the tired, down at heel look that would reflect the status of Robert Carlyle’s character. The alpha numeric number plates were removed and black & white number plates fitted in keeping with the era (SA 13335 from my ‘55 FJ-215) and she was ready for action. Then I watched, with some considerable trepidation as the FX departed on the back of a trailer – destined for movie stardom. Some weeks later I was extremely relieved when it returned, in the same condition, but now sporting a very nice reproduction, period registration sticker. I have to admit enjoying the experience - and the cheque came in handy too. Black & White didn’t win any Oscars but that old green FX was the star to me – Robert Carlyle was pretty good too! Cheers Tony Hitchin
