One scene shows 4-speed floor manual and another scene shows 3-speed column automatic.

The shifting shots were filmed in what looks to be a 71-73 mustang.

The engine picture looks like a big block, but it is in a mustang or torino. you can see the shock towers. 71 full size fords didnt have shock towers.

Anybody have any idea why they put that bar on the front bumper?

I think this car was the stunt car and that bar was like a pushbar. The other car didn't have one, My guess is that the other car was used for close ups on Burt.

I think it is a 71 Boss 351 Mustang(same car as the shift shots). It looks like it says Boss on the Valve Covers.

NYCNative wrote I sure wish I could get one of those cars! It was a great movie car! I'd sure love to know what really was under that hood, for real? And yes, Burt was on his top ''A'' game behind the wheel in White Lighting! And noone else looks as smooth & as cool as his does when he's in the driver's seat! . . .

It was a great car, and Burt could really work some magic behind the wheel! I wonder whatever became of that car? . . . I'd love to know whatever happened to it? I hope Burt saved it?

They filmed the barge jump last from what I understand the scene the the movie was the second attempt. The first try the car hit the barge and fliped off into the river. Burt dove in and saved the stunt man. and the second attempt was with the other car. Im guessing they totaled both. but i never heard what happened to the other car that took a bath maybe still down there?

And you could CLEARLY see that they did total it unfortunately. All four doors were buckled out.
