Quote Came across your database recently and couldn't help but notice the unidentified Land Rover from the popular 1960s show The Saint. I can safely say that the SUV in question is a canvas-top Land Rover Series II, built from 1958-1961. This car can be differentiated from the Series I by the rounded rectangular wing mirrors and by the significantly larger front grille and headlamp spacing. Cues that it is not a later Series IIA vehicle include the lack of front indicators, narrow wheels and tires, and a more flush-fitting bonnet where the IIA had a much thicker item that rested on top of the body. Also, Series IIA cars had much cleaner, less squared styling. Hope I could be of some service!
Sincerely,
Walter

So Series I or Series II?

It is a Series I, trust me. :)

For Walter:
The easiest way of keeping Series I and II/IIa apart are the sides. With the Series II the barrel sides were introduced, replacing the flat sides of the Series I. There are many more details to keep the Series apart, but I will refrain from listing all, as otherwise Antoine (antp) will kill me for overburdening the database! :D
Best have a look at some of the many Land-Rover dedicated web-sites. This one might be a good start: http://www.lrfaq.org/FAQ.2.Ident.LR.html

For the details you gave I can tell you that the wing-mirrors are indeed non-original, but of a later model. This type of grille, the inverted-T, was introduced in 1952 and kept until 1968. The rounded bonnet front is known as the de-luxe bonnet (!) and was an optional extra for the Series II. The front indicators were introduced in 1958 with only a few early Series II having no indicators.

Have a look around the IMCDb database. You can find many Series Land-Rover (/vehicles.php?resultsStyle=asImages&makeMatch=2&make=Land-Rover&modelMatch=0&model=Series&modelInclModel=on&modelInclChassis=on) plus a few really rare Land-Rover based conversions.
