1931 - either a six cylinder CM or an eight cylinder CD. The CM used 5.00x19 tyres and the CD was on 5.50x18. This car looks to have the taller narrower tyres so I would say it is a CM.

You're right, nzcarnerd, it's gotta be a six. Here's why: The sixes used fixed-position radiator shutters while the eights' opened and closed thermostatically. But because of the shape of the openings in the radiator shell there were fixed, unmoving shutter portions at the top and bottom of each grill on the eight. Since the shutters on this car can be seen to go all the way up it's not an eight. Looks an awful lot like my own car, a CM roadster.

Back again after a few years. Yes, the hero is driving a '31 Chrysler CM roadster. Additional proof: It's not easy to see, but the "V" in the crest of each front fender's leading edge molding points in the same direction as the ones on my CM. The CD's molding was a slightly different shape and the V pointed the other way.

This car is the only CM roadster I have ever seen without sidemount spare tires. My left front fender is a mess, badly repaired around 1950. I've got an excellent spare I bought at a local junkyard for $25 when I was in college. But it - and a matching spare for the other side - don't have the spare-tire wells. Seeing this car tempts me to find a rear spare-tire mount and use my two fenders the way they are... so I might be able to finish the job before I kick the bucket. That's the beauty of seeing period pieces like this otherwise silly little movie!
