This looks an extremely rare and interesting Graham Sharknose coupe of 1939 with body modifications by Pourtout in France. The sidetrim indeed shows the typical Pourtout style sidemold bending downwards to the centre of the rear fender, different from the US versions that had a straight belt molding .It has semaphors behind the side windows and Graham's rear fender skirts. The similarly styled Pourtout Graham cabriolet bodies are better documented but this one is really unique , never saw another picture of a similar coupe before.I ignore if it had the Special or Supercharged engine .If some Pourtout specialists are around I would be interested in more details. |

Very interesting indeed! In "Automobilia" no.67 (mars/avril 2004) you can find an article about Graham Shark Noses with French bodywork: cabriolets by Pourtout (twelve, of which one having belonged to Françoise Sagan), Vanvooren, Saoutchik (one of ggeneral de Lattre), Letourneur et Marchand, a limousine by the latter. And four of the ten coupés by Pourtout, all built on a basis of the Graham Supercharger [97] between 15 of April 1938 and the end of 1939. Most of these had suplymentary headlight (like the one shown here), probably because of French legislation. The 1938 models had standard running boards, the 1939 models didn't (like here). Number 4 (Mrs. Christen) had shorter doors and a dickey-seat, nr 8 (Mrs. Goy) had extra long doors and fice seats, and nr 10 (Soïfer) was a two-seater. Concerning the one shown here: it's a 1939 model indeed, based on a Graham Supercharger [97], one of ten built (or even one of eight, since we can exclude nr 4 and nr 8). Very rare, very interesting, very nice find!  |

I am one co-author of the study on Graham "sharknose" with special coachwork in France, published in Automobilia (n°65 and 67, 2004). Since then, several data have surfaced. The coupé by Pourtout in Gueule d'Ange appears to be the only one with external door hinges, as in Pourtout Convertibles. If so it would be the n° 10 and last Coupé built by Pourtout in 1939 (first owner: Mr Soïfer). A nice photo of this car appears in "The Graham legacy", Vol II by M.E.Keller, a book that, unfortunatly, carries much errors about the French coachbuilt sharknoses). Another coupé by Pourtout may be seen at the begining of the film "La fiancée des ténèbres " of Serge de Poligny (1944-45). |
