2002-03 (block headrests as seen in the film) Similar to "old" Beetles, New Beetles can also be dated year by year (I only have info regarding 1998-2005) 98: First model year, released in March 1998, the first examples having late 1997 production dates. 98s have no repeater on the fender. Only year for an external lock. 99: The international version is launched in October 1998 at the Paris Motor Show. All Beetles received an extra repeater under the mirrors this year. 00: No exterior changes. Anti-theft coded ignition keys now standard. 01: New teardrop mirrors. Beetle RSI introduced. 02: Swivel badge replaced with static enamel badge in September 2001, moving the trunk handle to the lip of the tail gate. This can be quickly noticed on earlier '02s when the logo on the back doesn't stand off as much. Donut headrests replaced by block headrests March 2002. Turbo S model introduced. 03: Convertible added. Mirrors slightly face lifted, now with indicators at the tips. 04: Xenon headlights and DSG added to options list. 05: Last year for pre-facelift.
