A 1960 Ford Anglia and a 1957 Minor are not particularly mighty contenders ....

Yes, you may be right, but the mightiest contender of them all lurks behind the Morris.

Agreed, it was, after all, designed in 1938.

Although advanced in terms of power output per litre, and the much shouted "seven moving parts", the two stroke engine has proved a dead end in similar fashion to sleeve valves, magnetos and carburettors. The build quality of the cars exported to U.K. at least, left much to be desired, some of my colleagues owned these when they were in fashion, and I recall one immobilised on the office car park for want of a gear lever, which had literally come off in the driver's hand. The other point, of course, is that it was still on sale at a time in its history where it had become as retrograde in its design as shellac gramophone records are these days. (Except in my house.)

I miss 2 strokes, the smell, the all or nothing powerband, there's nothing quite like the crackle & howl of a Kawasaki or Suzuki triple on spannie pipes........

@jfs: You're absolutely right; already my first comment on this particular page was just a little, lightweight tweak, obviously pointed into dsl's direction. I wasn't around at the time, but I still know that both the Wartburg in particular and the two stroke engine in general had their flaws and were obsolete already even back then.
@The sad biker: I admire the bikes you mention, but frankly I don't miss the two stroke engines most of the time- especially when I'm stuck behind some tiny 50cc scooter in dense traffic. These miserable things are worse than the oldest trucks as far as their smell is regarded.

@cl82, there's nothing to beat a little tweak in dsl's direction, especially where the "jewels" might be involved.

Jewels? Iron pyrite comes to mind!
