The only RHD Gremlin made, exported to Australia for market evaluation, and assembled locally by AMI as a Rambler.

Wow, talk about rare! Way ahead of it's time - hatchbacks were a very new thing in 1971. I'm not sure it would have taken off here, although Honda did have some success with the Civic in 1973.

Edit: just saw a Gremlin here in Australia in 2023! The first one I've ever seen in Australia.

And way ahead of those rare hatchbacks the Renault 4 (1962), Renault 16 (1965), Hillman Imp (1963), Austin A40 Countryman (1959) and Austin Maxi (1969), not to mention the 1940s commercial versions of the Citroën Traction Avant.

Hillman Imp is not a hatchback, nor is the Austin A40. The Maxi I don't believe was sold in Australia.

It was, although under a different name. We had one recently on the site.

Mmm, what are the odds of a one-of-a-kind vehicle popping up in a TV drama? I suspect Crawfords had some sort of deal going with AMI at the time - "Homicide" star Leonard Teale raced a Toyota Corolla as an AMI works driver, the AMI dealership featured heavily in a episode of "Division 4", and several Rebels were used in their shows, along with Hornets, a Javelin, an Ambassador, and the Gremlin. Crawfords also had a Rebel set up as a camera car.

What do you get when you open the rear window of a Hillman Imp or an A40 Countryman?

Check out coachbuilt Royces, Bentleys and Daimlers.

- (for the Imp) - pure pleasure.
- (for the A40) - rust.

Pity. It would be the only rear-engined hatchback I can think of.

You can put stuff in through the rear window of an Imp, ergo it is a hatchback.
