C'est l'auto que les méchants font sauter au début du film. De Niro s'en réchappe grâce au blindage qu'il a fait installer sous la voiture.

According to the IMDB page for Casino, this is a 1981 model because it features a V8-6-4 variable displacement engine, which is evident from the dashboard lights in the interior shots. It is also a Biarritz model because it has the badge and light on the side pillar. Apparentely, according to the narration in the film, this particular model Cadillac was fitted with a metal plate under the driver's seat, which saved Sam Rothstein (based on Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal) from being blown up by the car bomb. I don't know if this is really true or not, but it seems the year of this car is quite important to the story.

The notoriously unrealiable V8-6-4 also had a small placard on the front fender by the door. I don't see one on the car in the larger pic but it's visible on the car in the pic submitted by antp

What was so controversial about the 8-6-4 engine?

cause i've heard that there were some problems with the engine but i can't understand why.

The 8-6-4 was designed to save gas, It accelerates from a dead stop on all 8 cylinders, after you ease off the throttle a little , it shuts down 2 cylinders, leaving the engine running on 6 cylinders and while maintaining a constant speed it shuts down 2 more cylinders, leaving the car running on 4 cylinders, unfortunately the engineers who developed this idea were alot smarter that the cars computer was. The engine was a mechanical nightmare.

An idea that was ahead of its time; the technology of the day wasn't up to it. The same idea is used by a few manufaturers today, only this time it works the way it's supposed to.

Mechanically the V8-6-4 design was quite sound; engineering wise it's almost identical to the systems used today. The problem was the electronics; there was virtually no margin for error in the set-up. Once people learned out to fix them properly they ran fine, as exhibited by the use of the engine in the 7 and 8 passenger models for several years. It is true.

The redesign for this generation had an unexplained balancing issue which was, also inexplicably, solved by welding a large metal plate under the driver's seat.

Besides, this is one of the few things taken verbatim from Lefy Rosenthal's life/book of his life. The rest of the movie is "inspired" by Rosenthal.

No. The engine was the 368, a sound all cast iron big block (technically, apparently). As detailed above, the only problem with that engine was the electronics.

Here is a really interesting face unlike in the movie the real life bomb was no faulty and did go off properly. The issue was, they placed the bomb underneath the car directly under the seat. The year that model came out (1981 Cadillac Eldorado) , there was a steel plate installed under the drivers seat for balance correction that allowed Lefty's life to be spared. The manufacturer only had the plate in that specific model and year because of the defect in balancing.

I just watched the Motor Mythbusters episode about this scene the other day, and they bought a 1981 Eldorado Biarritz and there was no plate and they could find no service memo from GM to the dealers about adding the plate. They ended up adding one of their own and it blew through the passenger compartment and out the roof, busting the myth (and killing Buster).
